The Chronicles of Riddick

15. The Chronicles of Riddick
The Chronicles of Riddick (Widescreen Unrated Director's Cut)

I started watching this already thinking of how I would make a little joke about it here and move on. Well, I won’t. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a good movie, but it is a good bad movie. I wanted mindless sci-fi action and I got it – with some good costumes, sets, and original bad guys. I expected some wooden acting and some bad dialouge and I got it – but I also got Judi Dench & Thandie Newton (that’s one and a half Oscars). I consider it a victory for this movie that it made me want some of the story lines to be fleshed out more (who are the Elementals?). I still wouldn’t go see a sequel in the theater, but I’d probably rent it.

Anal Explosion

Well, that title is sure to get me a couple of Google hits. I’ll warn you now – if you have a sensitive constitution, stop here.

So, last night The Lovely Wife noticed that our dog, Gretchen, was worrying her… posterior. She checked it out and it looked a bit swollen. This was about 10:30pm, so we decided to take her to the vet in the morning. The next day I was getting ready for work, so TLW took her to the vet. I’ll let her take it from there

Funny, touching, could’ve been saccharine but wasn’t, really sweet and well done. Ended a little abruptly, I thought, but that’s a small fault. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I must admit… I misted up a little… fine, there were maybe a couple of tears.

General News

The Lovely Wife has hit spring break running and started posting on her blog again.

SXSW is about to start and I don’t have a badge, a wristband, or any money, despite a concerted effort to make some this weekend.

On the bright side there are at least two people I haven’t seen in too long who are coming to town this week. Chris and Ethan, I’m talking about you, call me, we’ll get a beverage.

We haven’t found a house yet, but now, instead of being afraid that there was one house for us and we didn’t get it, I’m more afraid that there are 50 houses for us. And I have to choose one. That sounds kinda tedious.

I have this Friday off, because I am Patrick and it is St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, there will be drinking.

That’s all for now. Carry on.

あなたが気づけばマナ

On my 41st day of not smoking, and on the verge of the first SXSW where you can’t smoke inside anywhere, I bring you SMOKERS’ STYLE, 5 pages of graphics from Japan. I think they’re all supposed to be anti-smoking messages, though this one makes smoking sound kinda cool.

P.S. I have no idea what the title of this post means, becasue it’s in Japanese and I am painfully monolingual. If you can read the title and translate it into English for all of us, well… please don’t. Nobody likes a show-off.

Happy Birthday, Mother.

Dearest Mother,

While my other brothers are busy giving you flowers and dinners and cards and grandchildren, I will give you this, a post on my blog. It may not seem like much in comparison to their gifts, but if you take into account how enormously self-involved I am, the fact that I was able to turn the spotlight even slightly in your direction speaks to the depth of feelings I have for you. And really, when it comes right down to it, wouldn’t you rather have the love and devotion of your eldest, smartest and most handsome of sons? Flowers die, cards yellow and crack, grandchildren forget you and dinners just turn into poop, but the love of a good son will warm your heart deep into your golden years.

Your son,
Rhett

HH Whatever

Well, that house is gone. Last night we went through the 5 stages of grief in about 3 hours and this morning we are ready to move on. More or less. We are stil considering seeding the house with termites so it will fall down around the ears of whoever gets it, but it’s not really their fault, so we probably won’t. And I don’t know where to buy termites.

So this leaves us with a loan and no house. We are looking for something 150K or less in sections 1B, 2, 3, 4 or 5. Basically anything east of MoPac, north of the river and inside 183. Central air is a big plus, wood and tile floors would be nice, but we can fix that if we find the right house covered in carpet. The right house was probably built in the 40’s or 50’s, anything built after that with the aesthetic we like is probably custom built and way too expensive. Oh yeah, a nice big yard with trees would be cool, too. And a greenhouse. And a monkey enclosure. And an underground lair with a grotto.

Let me know if you find a house like that.

I knew it! I knew things were going too well. Today I got word of a “red flag”, an issue that could stand between us and our house. I won’t go into details right now, suffice it to say that we are trying to buy a house from the government. Everyone is trying to be positive, but it doesn’t look good.

House Hunting 3

So we made an offer and it was accepted. Keep your fingers crossed that we can work through all the weird closing stuff in the next several weeks. If all goes well… we have a house. This is all happening very fast.
