Terry Gross – One Rockin’ Jew

D. James Kennedy, for those of you who don’t know, is the scary waxen zombie who heads the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Coral Ridge, Florida. Three seconds at his church’s website gave me this…

“What about me? Are they going to take my feeding tube away next?” That is what disabled people all over America are asking, in light of the court-ordered killing of Terri Schiavo!

…never mind that Terri, on her liquefied brain’s best day, couldn’t have formed one syllable of one of the words in that quote, which would automatically differentiate her from “disabled people all over America” with the ability to ask things. Then I felt like ants were crawling under my skin and I had to close their page. It was probably Satan. Or revulsion.

Terry Gross is the host of Fresh Air, an interview program on NPR. She interviewed D. James Kennedy on yesterday’s show, and the talk centered on his goal of “reclaiming” America for Christ. Some of my favorite highlights, and I paraphrase here:

1. The theory of evolution is responsible for the Kinsey Report, the sexual revolution, homosexuality, feminism and the Holocaust.

and

2. If secular government is allowed, you are allowing man to give you your rights, and what man can give he can take away. Only god can give you rights. (Or, it is inferred, set some proper boundaries. Like against the homos. Or women.)

Really, if Satan has allowed you to read this far, you may as well go listen to the interview. Terry, normally a paragon of cool and collected interviewing, actually sputters with indignation a couple of times.

Oh, and I don’t really know if Terry Gross is Jewish or not, but it would help explain why she hates D. James Kennedy so much. That, or her possession of a frontal lobe. One or the other.

A word of advice.

No matter how appealing it sounds, do not get out of bed hungover after only five hours of sleep and drive 2 1/2 hours to Houston to spend 2 hours in an IKEA and then drive 2 1/2 hours back. Trust me on this one.

On a side note, I got a new cover for the couch and it’s gone from blue to red. Or it will. Someday. When I disassemble to couch and change the cover.

Oh, one more bit of advice. Formatting your 18 line spreadsheet in 8-point Helvetica is just mean. It’s impossible to read, especially when you combine it with all capital letters. It’s only 18 lines, so play around with all that space you’ve got. Maybe try a nice 10-point Verdana. See how much nicer that looks?

The Greatest American

The Discovery Channel, in conjuction with AOL and Satan, have decided to stick a crown on the Greatest American. (thanks to propeliea for sending this to me)

Some of the people on this list make sense, as they had an impact on the history of this country. Here you have Bell, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, King and Salk, among others. But Madonna? Marilyn Monroe? Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore? FUCKING Dr. Phil?!

Dr. Phil on the same list as Dr. King makes me want to puke. If Dr. Phil has a shred of decency in the self-aggrandizing bag of shit that makes up his evil golem body, he’ll immediately insist on being removed from this list as unworthy. Then he’ll move to Idaho and never return to the public eye. Because he killed himself. From shame.

Is there anyone on the list that makes you half as angry? Let me know in the comments. I need to get away from my computer now and take a walk…

Sundry

I am -4% Republican, or, according to this site, “a damn Commie”. And, I might add, proud of it. (via The Blue Parrot)

I’ve always liked cellular automata programs, ever since I first saw them years ago. Looking into their origins, I found out they have been around since 1970, or, as long as me. There is now way more information about them than I will ever read.

The coolest variation I’ve seen so far turns it into a 2 player game, of sorts. Work for a while in the practice area, then test your creation against someone else’s in the battle area. See how closely your arrangement matches the most successful configurations. Mine, sadly, did not.

For JenJ, I say, “Try something a little different next time you endulge your love of over-roasted coffee. You have so many choices.”

Choose a director, watch their videos. And by “their videos” I mean the 5 Bjork vids directed by Lynn Fox. I haven’t seen the other ones. They could be good too.

Sunday Movie Marathon

Writing about movies is hard. Which is why the Sunday Movie Marathon isn’t being posted on Sunday. And why this post will be pretty short.

I watched “Heir to an Execution” and “Derrida”, both documentaries. “Heir” is about a woman investigating the impact her grandparents had on the family. This is a made complicated by the fact that her grandparents were Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. I was familiar with the Rosenberg case but was unaware that they left two sons behind. No one in the family would adopt them because of the stigma attached to their parents; they were finally adopted by Ann and Abel Meeropol. Oddly, it wasn’t mentioned in the movie, but Abel Meeropol was a songwriter, schoolteacher and union activist who wrote the song “Strange Fruit” in the late 1930s. I particularly enjoyed the interviews with all the old “progressives”, most of them as fiery as ever, despite their age.

“Derrida” is about French philosopher Jacques Derrida. Sorta. The filmmakers followed him for years, taping him eating breakfast, chatting with his wife and giving lectures. In between bits culled from all this the narrator reads passages from his books. The passages probably have something to do with what they’re showing of his life, or maybe something to do with the way the’re showing it, but for a beginner they were… incomprehensible. I don’t really feel like I know anything about his philosophy that I didn’t know before, and what I knew before was the word “deconstruction”. Just the word. I can say he seemed like a pretty nice guy. And he had crazy hair. I wish I had crazy hair.
